were sent out to the Tai Po Road to control hundreds of Chinese who were stealing wood and blocking the roads with the trunks of trees they had cut from the hillsides. A continuous stream of persons evacuating from Cheung Sha Wan was observed. Looting of houses at Yen Chau Street damaged by bombs was detected and stopped by Police.
09.00 Inspector Saunders was told by some Royal Scots stat- ioned near the World Pencil Factory that enemy troops were in position between there and Lai Chi Kok Prison. He enquired from some Royal Scots officers at a Trench Mortar position at the junction of Castle Peak and Tai Po Roads but could get no definite information. Acting Sub Inspector Wallingford was detai led as liaison officer between them and Inspector Saunders. Sub Inspector Brittain noticed that official papers were being burnt but was unable to gather accurate information as to the position but from coversation he overheard it appeared serious.
10.00 Divisional Inspector, Sham Shui Po, telephoned the
Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, and informed him of the reported position of the enemy.
He was instructed to report on the situation at Sham Shui Po as frequently as possible.

Divisional Inspector, Sham Shui Po, informed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, that enemy had advanced rapidly in the Castle Peak Road area and that our troops had retreated to the world Pencil Factory and along the Tai Po and Lai Chi Kok Roads. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, consul- ted Command or Brigade Headquarters and was informed that our troops had retired slightly to straighten the line but that the position was satisfactory. 10.00 The district was shelled.

One shell fell in Nathan Road near the station killing about 60 persons and
Two shells fell in Sai wounding a number of others.
One shell fell in Yee Street wounding two persons. Nathan Road near Shangtung Street killing and wounding several persons. Two unexploded shells fell in Nathan Road near the Prince's Theatre.
A shell caused heavy casualties when it landed between the Tai Shan Hotel and the Macao Wharf.

There was heavy shelling and bombing of the Peak. Several small fires were started including one at Wong Nei Chung Gap Petrol Dump. Reports were received of the looting of several private houses which turned out to be servants removing their own property. From this date onwards Police were occupied to a large extent in controlling crowds at rice distribu- ting centres due chiefly, Inspector Nolloth states, to incompetent handling by members of the local Food Control.
